🟦 Quatrain 1
Loving in truth, and fain in verse my love to show,

That she (dear she) might take some pleasure of my pain,—
(যাতে সে (প্রিয় সে) আমার যন্ত্রণাতেও কিছু আনন্দ খুঁজে পায়,—)
Pleasure might cause her read, reading might make her know,
(আনন্দ পেলে সে পড়বে, পড়া তাকে জানতে সাহায্য করবে,)
Knowledge might pity win, and pity grace obtain,—
(জ্ঞান হয়তো তার করুণা জাগাবে, আর করুণা থেকে পাওয়া যাবে দয়া,)

I sought fit words to paint the blackest face of woe;
(আমি খুঁজলাম উপযুক্ত শব্দ, আমার গভীর দুঃখের চিত্র আঁকার জন্য;)
Studying inventions fine, her wits to entertain:
(নানা নতুন ভাবনা তৈরি করলাম, তার মনকে আকৃষ্ট করার জন্য:)
Oft turning others' leaves, to see if thence would flow
(প্রায়ই অন্য কবিদের কবিতা পড়ে দেখতাম, যদি কিছু অনুপ্রেরণা পাই,)
Some fresh and fruitful showers upon my sun-burn'd brain.
(আমার ক্লান্ত ও রোদে পোড়া মনে যদি কিছু সতেজ ও ফলদায়ক ধারনা ঝরে।)

But words came halting forth, wanting Invention’s stay:

Invention, Nature’s child, fled step-dame Study’s blows;
(ভাবনা, যা প্রকৃতির সন্তান, পালিয়ে গেল সৎমা ‘অধ্যয়ন’-এর আঘাতে;)
And others’ feet still seemed but strangers in my way.
(আর অন্য কবিদের ভাবনা আমার কাছে আগন্তুকের মতোই ঠেকলো।)
Thus great with child to speak, and helpless in my throes,
(এইভাবে মনের ভেতর কথার জন্ম নিলেও, যন্ত্রণায় আমি ছিলাম অসহায়,)

Biting my truant pen, beating myself for spite—
(আমি কলম কামড়ে ধরলাম, নিজেকেই দোষারোপ করলাম—)
“Fool,” said my Muse to me, “look in thy heart, and write.”

এই কবিতায় কবি নিজ প্রেমের অনুভূতিকে কবিতায় প্রকাশ করতে চান। কিন্তু শব্দ খুঁজে পান না, অন্য কবিদের কবিতা অনুকরণ করে সন্তুষ্ট হতে পারেন না। তার নিজের মনেও অস্থিরতা। তখন তার মিউজ বা কাব্যিক সত্তা তাকে বলে, “তোমার হৃদয়ে যা আছে, সেটাই লিখ।” — এটাই প্রকৃত কবিতা।
