One day I wrote her name upon the strand,

But came the waves and washed it away:

Again I wrote it with a second hand,
(আমি আবার দ্বিতীয়বার তা লিখলাম,)
But came the tide, and made my pains his prey.
(কিন্তু জোয়ার এসে আমার প্রয়াসকে গ্রাস করল।)

"Vain man," said she, "that doest in vain assay,
("অর্থহীন পুরুষ," বলল সে, "যে নিষ্ফল প্রচেষ্টা করছ,)
A mortal thing so to immortalize;
(একটি নশ্বর জিনিসকে অমর করতে চাও;)
For I myself shall like to this decay,
(কারণ আমিও এইভাবে ক্ষয়প্রাপ্ত হব,)
And eke my name be wiped out likewise."

My verse your virtues rare shall eternize,
(আমার কবিতা তোমার বিরল গুণাবলীকে চিরস্থায়ী করবে,)
And in the heavens write your glorious name:
